Happy Bday to a pretty awesome person!

*Belated birthday post

skylar

Skylar,

It doesn't matter how old you get, you will still be the little girl who liked to order pespi with her hanguber and exclaimed with wonder that there were sparkles and stars shining in her feet after a particularly long car trip. I know that we often have differing opinions on how life should go around here but I just wanted to say that I am truly proud of the woman that you are becoming. You have had to endure far more than many kids your age and I truly wish that so many things could have been easier for you. But life isn't without its challenges and you have risen above and grown into a strong, independent person who has a good understanding of who she is. You have a beautiful spirit and underneath the sometimes prickly adolescent exterior, a heart of gold. I love you much my girl. Happy 11th birthday!

Love,

Mom

Sweet justice

My oldest daughter has been obsessed with going to Calaway Park all summer. Ever since the flyer came in the mail depicting throngs of smiling children merrily walking the midway and going on rides she has been talking about Calaway Park and it's "all you can ride buffet". Interestingly the frazzled parents carrying bags laden with sunscreen, bugspray, ritz bits etc and covered in sticky cotton candy/candy apple finger prints are somehow left out of the advertisement. Since then she has taken to writing the words "all you can ride buffet" on various paper like surfaces. When I was cleaning the kitchen the other day I noticed her childlike printing scrawled on the back of a photo. Sure enough, it was the aforementioned phrase. Curious, I turned the photo over and there centred in the middle and taking up most of the space was the well endowed derriere of my ex-mother-in-law. (The kids had taken a disposable camera with them on their last trip to MB and for some bizarre reason thought they needed a picture of their grandmother's butt)It was one of those sort of satisfying moments, so much so that I had to keep the picture. Now, if things get nasty with my ex-in-laws as they so often seem to, I can pull out that photo with the words printed on the back and smile.

shady pines bound

I was having what I thought was a good intellectual discussion with my five year old the other day (hmm....maybe that's a bit of a stretch) about how people in ancient Rome used to speak primarily latin and not English. She was fascinated about the whole concept of people and their lives a long time ago and asked alot of really good questions - most of which were language related. Then much to my amusement and horror she asked me what language we spoke when I was little. HUH?????!!!! I'm only 27, that hardly groups me with the ancient Romans...then again....maybe the memories already starting to fade.....eh well.....Anyways...off to go celebrate the coming of the new year and all that...have a good one....
